Code of Conduct (COC)

Aim 

IRIS Egypt Code of Conduct is one of the ways that put IRIS Egypt into practice. This Code of Conduct is designed to provide clear guidance to IRIS Egypt members and participants for conducting themselves in a manner that is consistent with their role and commitment to our values and to provide examples of conduct that will always be unacceptable. All IRIS Egypt members and participants are responsible for sticking to this Code of Conduct and promoting the dissemination of it to be able to create an inclusive, respectful, and safe environment for everyone.

Values and Principles


  • IRIS Egypt pursues its aims without political, religious, social, racial, sexual or any other discrimination, promotes humanitarian ideals among people, and so seeks to contribute to the creation of responsible future young activists.


  • IRIS Egypt aims to and responsible for creating a safe space (free from all forms of unethical behavior or violations of Human Rights) for its participants.

Prohibited forms of Conduct


  • Bullying, Cyberbullying, and Discrimination.
  • Negative comments based on nationality, gender, social background, appearance, religion, or any other personal characters.
  • Unfair and excessive public criticism.
  • Publicly insulting other members. 
  • Publicly undervaluing the efforts of members, trainers, coordinators, facilitators.
  • Non-verbal bullying e.g. exclusion, and public ignoring).

Sexual Violence and Harassment


  • Attempted or actual sexual assault, including rape, unwelcome touching, including pinching, patting, or rubbing. 
  • Verbal harassment: sexually suggestive comments, jokes, insults, pranks, or  gestures directed to an individual or group of people.
  • Making sexual comments about appearance, clothing, body parts; or rating a person's sexuality.
  • Manipulation of a member's personal or professional reputation by rumors, gossip, or ridicule.
  • Repeatedly asking a person for dates or asking for sex. 
  • Sharing or displaying sexually inappropriate content (images, videos, stories, or jokes) in any platform related to IRIS Egypt (ex: WhatsApp/FB groups) either formal or informal platforms.
  • Making derogatory or demeaning comments about someone's sexual orientation, gender expression or identity.
  • The use of vulgar language either directed or generally, even under consent is prohibited within IRIS Egypt.

Smoking & Substance Abuse


  • All forms of smoking (Including but not limited to cigarettes, vaping, cigars, and/or Shisha) within IRIS Egypt venues and accommodation venues are strictly prohibited regardless of the venues’ policies.
  • The distribution, possession, sale, or purchase of controlled substances of abuse and alcohol within IRIS Egypt venues and accommodation venues is strictly prohibited regardless of the venues’ policies.
  • Being under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or substances of abuse within IRIS Egypt venues and accommodation venues is strictly prohibited regardless of the venues’ policies.


Note: “Venue” in the previous articles is to be understood as the session venue, its yards, the accommodation venue (ex: the hotel) and its lobby.

Social Media & Privacy


  • Taking photos of people without their consent. 
  • Taking screenshots of conversations or posting personal details about someone else without their permission.
  • Being disruptive, stalking, following, or threatening anyone.

Safety Violations


  • Violent language directed against a person or group that is intended to incite hatred or violence, such as hate speech and non-verbal depictions and symbols.
  • Committing, attempting, threatening, or inciting physical violence (including but )not limited to fighting, kicking, punching, slapping, and/or pinching.
  • Use, or possession of any type of weaponry including but not limited to guns, firearms, knives, pocket knives, tasers, baseball bats, and/or corrosive substances.

Abuse of Authority


  • The abuse of authority/power is the improper use of a position of influence, power, or authority by an individual towards others. Abuse of authority can include a one-time incident or a series of incidents. It may also consist of conduct that creates a hostile or offensive work environment, which includes, but is not limited to, the use of intimidation, threats, blackmail, or coercion. 
  • Colleagues must be treated fairly, with courtesy, dignity and with respect.
